The classics have stood the test of time for a reason when it comes to cocktails. Take, for example, the gin martini or the Old Fashioned. Not to mention, popular drinks like margaritas, mojitos, and traditional daiquiris (not the frozen strawberry variety, as tasty as they may be). These recipes are highly sought after by millions of people every month because they are tried and true.
Having a few go-to cocktail recipes on hand can be beneficial, not only for entertaining guests at dinner, but also for personal enjoyment. Is there anything more satisfying than crafting your own cocktail from the ground up? Regardless of their recognition by the IBA, these timeless cocktails are essential knowledge for everyone to have (or at least attempt!).
Here’s a list of the essential cocktails to master at home or in the bar. Or a checklist to have on a bucket list
1. Classic Whiskey Sour
According to recipe author Erik Lombardo, the true sour is a perfect example of simplicity, using only whiskey, sugar, and citrus. While lemon is the most commonly used fruit for the citrus element, any juice with a noticeable level of acidity can be substituted. In traditional sours, egg whites were often added for a frothy, textural component to the drink. Surprisingly, the egg white also provided a necessary protein boost for those who indulged in this popular cocktail among the early morning drinkers in the 19th century.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) whiskey (bourbon or rye)
- 3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup
- Ice
- Lemon wheel or cherry, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Simple Syrup: If you don’t have simple syrup on hand, you can make it by dissolving equal parts sugar and water. Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup.
- Shake Well: Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds to ensure that the mixture is well-chilled and combined.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice (you can use a fresh ice cube or the one from the shaker).
- Garnish: Garnish with a lemon wheel or a cherry, if desired.
Optional Variation – Adding Egg White:
If you like a frothy texture in your Whiskey Sour, you can add egg white. Here’s how:
- Add Egg White: Before adding ice, add 1/2 oz (15 ml) of egg white to the shaker with the other ingredients.
- Dry Shake: Shake the ingredients without ice first for about 10-15 seconds to emulsify the egg white.
- Shake with Ice: Then add ice and shake again to chill the drink.
- Strain and Garnish: Strain into a glass as before and garnish.
2. Final Word
In the 1920s, the Last Word cocktail was first made at the Detroit Athletic Club. According to Lombardo, a Last Word consists of equal parts gin, lime, maraschino liqueur, and chartreuse, making it ideal for the strong and low-quality bathtub gin that was likely used in its original creation. Known for its bold, spicy, and tangy taste, the Last Word has gained popularity among cocktail lovers and is aptly named for its high alcohol content and intense flavor. It is often referred to as a “closer.”
Cocktail Recipe

- 3/4 oz (22 ml) gin

- Garnish: Garnish with a lime twist or a cherry if desired.
3. Singapore Sling
According to Lombardo, the Singapore Sling contains a great number of components. However, if you are willing to gather all the necessary ingredients, you will be delighted with a refreshing and alluring beverage that has a delightful red hue and a balanced blend of herbal and sweet flavors. It is best enjoyed on humid summer evenings when even the sunset offers no respite. While wearing linen pants and being well-read are not obligatory, they are highly recommended for the full experience.

4. Classic Cocktail – Old Fashioned
According to Erika Kotite, while many cocktails have come and gone, this particular one has been around for at least 200 years. The reason for its longevity is debatable, with rye or bourbon enthusiasts citing its clear and flavorful taste, while others appreciate its simplicity and classic appearance. It is considered a wise drink as it offers complexity without overpowering the essence of the spirit. This cocktail, consisting of spirit, sugar, and bitters, is often revered and should be consumed in abundance.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 sugar cube (or 1/2 teaspoon simple syrup)
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- Ice
- Orange twist or slice, for garnish
- Maraschino cherry, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Glass: Place the sugar cube in an old-fashioned glass. If using simple syrup, add it directly to the glass.
- Add Bitters: Saturate the sugar cube with Angostura bitters. If using simple syrup, just add the bitters on top.
- Muddle: Muddle the sugar cube and bitters together until the sugar is dissolved. If using simple syrup, stir until well mixed.
- Add Whiskey: Fill the glass with a large ice cube or several smaller ones. Pour in the bourbon or rye whiskey.
- Stir: Stir gently to combine the ingredients and chill the drink. Stirring also dilutes the drink slightly, balancing the flavors.
- Garnish: Garnish with an orange twist or slice, and a maraschino cherry if desired.
This drink is known for its smooth and balanced blend of whiskey, bitters, and a touch of sweetness.
5. Moscow Mule
Looking for the perfect cocktail? Look no further than this classic combination of vodka, ginger beer, and lime. And don’t skimp on the ice – as Judy, a reviewer, puts it, “enough said.”
Cocktail Recipe
The Moscow Mule is a refreshing and simple cocktail that’s traditionally served in a copper mug. Here’s the recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) vodka
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) fresh lime juice

Instructions:

- Top with Ginger Beer: Fill the mug with ginger beer, adjusting the amount to taste.

- Garnish: Garnish with a lime wedge. You can also add a sprig of mint for extra aroma and a nice presentation.
This cocktail is known for its crisp and spicy flavor, making it a perfect choice for a refreshing drink.
6. Southside
I cannot confirm if this is a classic for you, but it is definitely considered one of our favorites. According to Lombardo, “The Southside cocktail is an excellent representation of the transformative properties of mint”
Essentially, it is a refreshing take on the gin gimlet with the addition of mint in the shaker. Its origins are believed to date back to the Southside Sportsman’s club, a prestigious gentlemen’s club in Long Island during the 1860s. The club was renowned for its juleps and eventually created variations, including the popular Southside cocktail we know today.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) gin
- 3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lime juice (or fresh lemon juice for a slightly different flavor)
- 3/4 oz (22 ml) simple syrup
- 5-6 fresh mint leaves
- Ice
- Mint sprig, for garnish
- Lime wheel or lemon wheel, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the gin, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup. Pluck the fresh mint leaves from their stems.
- Muddle the Mint: In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh mint leaves and simple syrup. Gently muddle the mint leaves to release their oils, being careful not to tear them into pieces.
- Add the Liquids and Ice: Add the gin, fresh lime juice, and a handful of ice to the shaker.
- Shake Well: Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until the mixture is well-chilled.
- Strain: Double strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass or a coupe glass using a fine mesh strainer to catch any small bits of mint.
- Garnish: Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and, if desired, a lime or lemon wheel on the rim of the glass.
This drink is perfect for warm weather and is loved for its balance of gin’s botanicals with the refreshing notes of mint and citrus.
7. Boulevardier
According to Lombardo, at first glance, the Boulevardier may seem like a simple substitution of gin for bourbon in a Negroni, making it an ideal starter cocktail for bourbon enthusiasts looking to explore aperitif-based drinks. However, the true appeal of the Boulevardier lies in its differences from the Negroni. One notable difference is the higher amount of base spirit used, with a ratio of 2:1:1 rather than the usual 1:1:1. This allows the bourbon’s richness and natural sweetness to balance out the bitterness of Campari. When combined with a generous pour of vermouth, such as Carpano Antica, it’s clear that the Boulevardier packs a flavorful punch.
The Boulevardier is a sophisticated and richly flavored cocktail, often thought of as a bourbon or rye whiskey twist on the classic Negroni. Here’s the recipe:
Cocktails Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 oz (30 ml) bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 oz (30 ml) sweet vermouth
- 1 oz (30 ml) Campari
- Ice
- Orange twist, for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the bourbon or rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Campari.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the bourbon or rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Campari.
- Stir Well: Stir the mixture for about 20-30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or an old-fashioned glass filled with ice (you can use a large ice cube or several smaller ones).
- Garnish: Garnish with an orange twist. You can express the oils from the twist over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a quick twist before dropping it in.
Enjoy your Boulevardier! This cocktail offers a delightful balance of bitter, sweet, and boozy flavors, making it a great choice for a sophisticated sip.
8. Manhattan
According to Kotite, the classic Manhattan is an incredibly satisfying cocktail that can be compared to a layered cake, with each ingredient providing immense flavor and satisfaction. This renowned drink, originally created at The Manhattan Club in the 1870s for Winston Churchill’s mother who was born in Brooklyn, has been enjoyed by people of all genders, ages, and tastes. Whether you’re at a simple bar in the countryside, attending a fancy party in Los Feliz, or impressing your father-in-law (as I recently did), mixing up a Manhattan is always a delightful treat.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) rye whiskey (or bourbon, if preferred)
- 1 oz (30 ml) sweet vermouth
- 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
- Ice
- Maraschino cherry, for garnish
- Orange or lemon twist, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the rye whiskey (or bourbon), sweet vermouth, and bitters.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters.
- Stir Well: Stir the mixture for about 20-30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass or a coupe glass. Alternatively, you can strain it into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice if you prefer it on the rocks.
- Garnish: Garnish with a maraschino cherry. You can also add an orange or lemon twist for a bit of added citrus aroma if desired.
This cocktail is known for its smooth, balanced blend of whiskey’s boldness with the sweetness of vermouth and the aromatic complexity of bitters.
9. Dry Martini
This item is definitely included in the list. While the specified martini recipe uses a 2:1 ratio of gin to vermouth, personal preference plays a significant role in this classic cocktail. Some individuals may prefer a 5:1 ratio, while others may opt for a 1:1 ratio. And if you feel like it, you can even substitute vodka for gin. Just remember to add a twist or an olive as a garnish.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 oz (75 ml) gin (or vodka, if preferred)
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) dry vermouth
- Ice
- Lemon twist or olive, for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the gin (or vodka) and dry vermouth.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the gin and dry vermouth.
- Stir or Shake: Stir the mixture for about 20-30 seconds until well-chilled. Some prefer to shake their Martini for a slightly different texture and chill. If you prefer it shaken, shake the mixture for about 10-15 seconds.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass.
- Garnish: Garnish with a lemon twist or an olive. If using a lemon twist, you can express the oils over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a quick twist before dropping it in.
Enjoy your Dry Martini! This cocktail is celebrated for its clean, crisp taste and is perfect for those who appreciate the pure flavors of gin or vodka with just a hint of vermouth.
10. Classic Margarita
According to Kotite, the margarita predates the Super Bowl, even though they may seem like the perfect match. The story goes that a bartender in Rosarita Beach, Mexico created the first margarita for a dancer named Marjorie King, who allegedly had an allergy to all types of alcohol except tequila. Interestingly, ‘Margarita’ is the Spanish translation of Marjorie. While it is uncertain if Marjorie’s supposed liquor allergy is true, we can still raise a glass to her until we have a cocktail named after ourselves.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) tequila (100% agave blanco is recommended)
- 1 oz (30 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
- 3/4 oz (22 ml) triple sec or Cointreau
- Salt (for rimming the glass)
- Ice
- Lime wheel, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Glass: Rim a glass with salt. To do this, rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge to moisten it, then dip the rim into a plate of salt to coat it.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a shaker with ice. Add the tequila, freshly squeezed lime juice, and triple sec.
- Shake Well: Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into the prepared glass filled with ice.
- Garnish: Garnish with a lime wheel on the rim of the glass, if desired.
Enjoy your Classic Margarita! This cocktail is perfect for any occasion, with its bright citrus flavors and the kick of tequila balanced by the sweetness of the triple sec. Adjust the proportions of lime juice and triple sec to suit your taste preferences.
11. Martinez
The drink is not a martini but rather a “deceptively simple” cocktail that is suitable for pre-dinner, post-work, and any cocktail party. The ingredients include gin, sweet vermouth, marschino liqueur, and orange bitters, which all sound appealing. Lombardo also suggests using simple sweet vermouth options like Cinzano or Dolin Rouge, and Luxardo for the maraschino, which is the most popular and easily available. He also recommends using Regan’s Orange Bitters for the perfect Martinez, which will surely be appreciated by anyone who tries it.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) gin
- 1 oz (30 ml) sweet vermouth
- 1/4 oz (7.5 ml) maraschino liqueur
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- Lemon twist or cherry, for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a mixing glass with ice. Add the gin, sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters.
- Stir Well: Stir the mixture for about 20-30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass or a coupe glass.
- Garnish: Garnish with a lemon twist or a cherry.
This drink offers a wonderful balance of botanicals from the gin, the sweetness of the vermouth and maraschino liqueur, and a hint of citrus from the orange bitters. It’s a sophisticated and flavorful cocktail perfect for sipping on any occasion.
12. Gimlet
For those new to gin, a gimlet is an ideal introductory cocktail. The components are simplified to only include gin, lime juice, and simple syrup.

This cocktail is known for its crisp and citrusy flavor, perfect for any occasion. Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less simple syrup according to your preference.
13. The Negroni
According to Kotite, the Negroni is a well-known beverage consisting entirely of alcoholic components. It does not rely on any other ingredients and its true quality is revealed when crafted correctly. The drink has an interesting history, as it was created by General Pascal Olivier Count de Negroni (a real person!) who made a unique request while visiting a Florence bar in the 1920s. Instead of an Americano with soda, he asked for gin. The resulting mixture of bitter Campari, herbal notes, warm gin, and smooth vermouth makes for one of the most exceptional pre-dinner drinks ever invented.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 oz (30 ml) gin
- 1 oz (30 ml) Campari
- 1 oz (30 ml) sweet vermouth
- Ice
- Orange twist or slice, for garnish

- Strain: Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with ice.
- Garnish: Garnish with an orange twist or slice. You can express the oils from the twist over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a quick twist before dropping it in.
This cocktail is perfect for those who appreciate bold and complex flavors.
The White Negroni is a variation of the classic Negroni that replaces the Campari with Suze, a French aperitif known for its bitter and floral notes
14. Classic Daiquiri
According to Kotite, the daiquiri has become synonymous with spring break, but its origins can be traced back to the working class. This uncomplicated concoction of rum, lime, and sugar was initially popularized by Cuban sailors in the 1800s and later introduced to Americans after the Spanish American War. Limes and rum play a crucial role in many traditional cocktails, creating a perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess that is ideal for quenching thirst and preventing scurvy. This refreshing drink, with its roots in the country, developed a devoted fan base after Ernest Hemingway supposedly made it his preferred cocktail. As mentioned by Jim Meehan in The PDT Cocktail Book, Hemingway, who was diabetic, substituted sugar with maraschino liqueur and grapefruit juice in his recipe. In the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, sweet cocktails were at the height of their popularity, leading to significant changes in daiquiri recipes. The modern versions of this drink can be found in places like Bermuda, Palm Springs, and Vegas, and while they may be tasty, they hardly showcase the delicious combination of rum and lime.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) white rum
- 3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup
- Ice
- Lime wheel or wedge, for garnish (optional)

- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the white rum, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the white rum, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup.
- Shake Well: Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into a chilled coupe glass or a rocks glass filled with ice.
- Garnish: Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge if desired.
Enjoy your Classic Daiquiri! This cocktail is known for its bright and tangy flavor, with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less simple syrup according to your taste preferences.
15. Sazerac Recipe
According to Kotite, the first blend of the cocktail was attributed to Antoine Peychaud, around the 19th century, in the French Quarter of the Big Easy. Originally, the drink was composed of cognac, also known as the Sazerac, but it was later altered to include rye whiskey due to a grape phylloxera epidemic that devastated the vineyards of Cognac, France in the 1870s.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 oz (60 ml) rye whiskey
- 1/4 oz (7.5 ml) simple syrup (or 1 sugar cube)
- 3 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
- Absinthe or Herbsaint
- Lemon peel, for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Glass: Chill an old-fashioned glass by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water. While the glass is chilling, rinse another glass with absinthe or Herbsaint, then discard the excess. This will impart a subtle flavor to the drink.
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the rye whiskey, simple syrup (or sugar cube), and Peychaud’s bitters.
- Muddle the Sugar: If using a sugar cube, place it in the bottom of the rinsed glass. Add a few dashes of Peychaud’s bitters and a splash of water. Muddle the sugar cube until it’s dissolved. If using simple syrup, skip this step.
- Mix the Ingredients: Add the rye whiskey and additional Peychaud’s bitters to the glass with the muddled sugar or simple syrup. Fill the glass with ice.
- Stir: Stir the mixture well for about 20-30 seconds to chill and properly dilute the drink.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into the chilled, absinthe-rinsed old-fashioned glass.
- Garnish: Express the oils from a lemon peel over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a quick twist. Rub the rim of the glass with the peel, then drop it into the drink.
This cocktail is known for its complex and aromatic flavors, with the anise notes of absinthe complementing the spicy rye whiskey and herbal bitters. Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less simple syrup according to your taste preferences.
16. Classic Tom Collins
According to Lombardo, the Collins cocktail has many appealing qualities. One of its main advantages is that it requires only a few ingredients, all of which are easy to find. For instance, if you happen to run out of angostura bitters, you can still make a tasty old fashioned without having to go on a journey. Lemons, sugar, and soda water are widely available, making it accessible to anyone, no matter their location. Additionally, the Collins is a versatile drink as you can replace the spirit with any other type and still achieve a delicious result, following the principle of the Mr. Potato Head approach to bartending.

Cocktail Recipe
17. Mojito
According to Jeffrey Morgenthaler, the mojito has become a popular drink among both bartenders and self-proclaimed cocktail enthusiasts. However, there are some who criticize its popularity, claiming it to be too common and time-consuming to make. However, I can recall a time when the mojito was just starting to gain popularity again and I have many fond memories of discovering the drink during summer gatherings in the kitchen. Despite having made countless mojitos throughout my career, I still believe it is a great drink when prepared correctly, and that’s all that truly matters.

18. Classic Cosmopolitan
When crafted skillfully (note: with a frugal amount of cranberry juice), the cosmopolitan cocktail can be a well-balanced and rejuvenating beverage. It may be assumed that the traditional cocktail–popularized by Sex and the City–would be excessively sweet because of its color, but that is not the truth. Cranberries and limes both have a tart taste. The key to a great cosmo is finding the right balance between sourness and sweetness. According to recipe creator Eric Kim, the proportions listed here achieve the perfect harmony between tanginess, sweetness, and bitterness.
Cocktail Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 oz (45 ml) vodka
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) triple sec (or Cointreau)
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) cranberry juice
- 1/2 oz (15 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice
- Ice
- Lime twist or wedge, for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Ingredients: Measure out the vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and freshly squeezed lime juice.
- Mix the Ingredients: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, and lime juice.
- Shake Well: Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
- Strain: Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass or a coupe glass.
- Garnish: Garnish with a lime twist or wedge.
This cocktail is known for its bright and citrusy flavor, with a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. Adjust the proportions of cranberry juice and lime juice according to your taste preferences.
